Identifying Objects

Take a Photo

Step 1: Tap "Take Photo" on the Identify tab

Reading Results

Each result shows:

  • Confidence — how certain the AI is (shown as a percentage)

If the AI detects a problem (e.g., a damaged item), a warning with fix suggestions appears.

Follow-Up Questions

Tap the follow-up field and type any question about the identified object — for example, "Is this plant edible?", "How rare is this animal?", or "How does this machine work?" Tap "Ask" to get an answer.

Switching AI Models

After an initial result, you can tap "Try Powerful Mode" for deeper analysis or "Ask Gemini AI" to cross-check with Google's model. Each model has different strengths for different subject types.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can WhatIsIt identify?

WhatIsIt can identify a wide range of subjects: animals, plants, flowers, vegetables, fruits, food, machines, vehicles, buildings, celestial objects, and more. If the AI isn't sure, it shows a low confidence score so you know to try again or ask a follow-up.

Can WhatIsIt identify sounds and audio?

Yes. The Audio tab lets you record any sound — a bird call, a musical instrument, speech, or ambient noise — and the AI identifies what it heard. You can also import existing audio files from your device. Results include a full transcript and a detailed identification with description.

What languages does translation support?

The Translate feature supports 7 languages: English, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, German, and French. Point your camera at any text and the app extracts and translates it to your chosen language.

How accurate is the AI?

Accuracy depends on image quality, lighting, and subject complexity. The confidence score gives you a clear indication of certainty. For difficult identifications, try the Powerful Mode or Gemini AI for better results. AI results may not always be correct — do not rely on them for medical, safety, legal, or critical decisions.

Is my data private?

Yes. Photos are sent securely to the AI server and not stored beyond processing. You can use the app as a guest with no account required.

What iOS version is required?

WhatIsIt requires iOS 17.0 or later. The app supports iPhone and iPad.
